President of the Senate at Kazimieras Simonavičius University Prof. Steffen Roth will held research workshop “Spaceship Earth: A Total Institution” on 25th of May in King’s College London.
About event:
Popularised in the 1960s, “Spaceship Earth” has become a metaphor for the vision turned imperative that all inhabitants of planet Earth be harmoniously united in the mission to preserve their planet. In this talk, I shall draw on works by Niklas Luhmann, Michel Foucault, and Friedrich August von Hayek to argue that fashionable “missionary theories” of economy, society, and environment converge, and complement one another, in the pathologisation of economic and social institutions as well as of the natural environment. If successfully applied, the “missionary therapies” proposed by the self-acclaimed officers of our planet might indeed turn it into a well-tempered, healthy, and totally institutionalised ‘Spaceship Earth’, a vessel with no mission other than orbiting another celestial body. The question for discussion is what can be done to avert this fate and develop more optimistic visions of the future.
About speaker:
Prof. Steffen Roth is Full Professor of Management at Excelia Business School, La Rochelle, France, and Full Professor of Social Sciences as well as President of the Senate at Kazimieras Simonavičius University, Vilnius, Lithuania. He is also Visiting Professor of Management and Organization at the University of Witten-Herdecke, Germany, and member of the Executive Committee of the Inter-University Centre Dubrovnik, Croatia.
One of his own favorite articles is ‘Digital transformation of social theory. A research update’, where he outlines the basic design of a universal social theory machine.
Steffen is the field editor for social systems theory of Systems Research and Behavioral Science and a member of the editorial board of Sociology. The journals his research has been published in include Journal of Business Ethics, Sociology of Health & Illness, Ecological Economics, Administration and Society, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, European Journal of the History of Economic Thought, European Management Journal, Journal of Cleaner Production, and Futures. We are excited to announce that 3rd international scientific conference “Challenges to Modern Law: An International Perspective” will be held next week. The conference will take place in Kazimieras Simonavicius University (KSU) and online on 24-25 of April.
Let us introduce our main conference keynotes from distinguished academics.
First keynote speaker: Ralf Rogowski Emeritus Academic at School of Law of Warwick University, United Kingdom.
Ralf Rogowski joined Warwick Law School in 1993, after having taught at Lancaster University and at the Free University in Berlin. For many years he was Director of the Law and Sociology Programme and Co-Director of Warwick University’s Social Theory Centre. He has been Visiting Professor at the Department of Law of the University of Florence, at the University of Torino, and the Marco Biagi Foundation of the University of Modena. He has been Senior Emile Noel Fellow at New York University School of Law in 2006 and a Visiting Fellow at the universities of Wisconsin, Madison; Konstanz; and Maastricht. He has also been a long-standing Research Associate at the Wissenschaftszentrum für Sozialforschung (WZB) in Berlin. Since 1996 he is general editor of the book series Studies in Modern Law and Policy and since 2012 with S. Karstedt and D. Taenzler of the book series Law, Crime and Culture.
Ralf Rogowski will give a conference report on the topic ”Challenges to Modern Law: An International Perspective”.
Second keynote speaker: Liliana Tymchenko Associate Professor at Department of Social Sciences of European Humanities University, Lithuania.
Liliana Tymchenko has many years of experience in teaching international law, the author of numerous publications on the problems of combating terrorism, recognition of states, human rights protection, existential issues of state development and the academic freedom. She was an expert of the Legal Reform Commission under the President of Ukraine (2019 – 2021), an expert of the Scientific Advisory Council of the Higher Administrative Court of Ukraine (2014 – 2017), a graduate of the programs of the American Bar Association, IREX, Coimbra Group Hospitality Scheme, Civic Education Project, etc. She defended her dissertation on “Political and Legal Aspects of International Terrorism” at the International Independent University of the Republic of Moldova and the Institute of State and Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. She has a wealth of experience in higher education administration and is passionate about teaching methodology and management in higher education.
Liliana Tymchenko will give a conference report on the topic ”Values, stereotypes, and realities of international law teaching in the second quarter of the 21st century”.
At “Challenges to Modern Law: An International Perspective” conference, we aim to serve as a forum for the critical examination of modern legal issues and of the law as it functions in the international community.

The Center of IP, Media and Innovation Law (University for Continuing Education Krems, Austria) hosts the first DDM4SME Conference on Data Economy Law (DELCON) on June 26, 2023 in Krems (Austria).
The conference is jointly organized by the ERASMUS+ Strategic Partnership consortium consisting of the University for Continuing Education Krems (Austria), Masaryk University (Czech Republic), Georg-August-University Goettingen (Germany) and Kazimieras Simonavicius University (Lithuania).
The Organizing Committee would like to invite papers on this topic. Possible subthemes include, but are not limited to:
- Risks and challenges of AI applications in businesses.
- Data related business models.
- Potential changes in legal structures due to ongoing digitization.
For innovative papers the DDM4SME project may grant scholarships for travel and accommodation.

From Monday 27 March until Friday the 31th Businet Moot Court Competition will be organized by the Businet Law Group in cooperation with Kazimieras Simonavicius University.
A Moot court is an extra curricular activity in which Law students take part in simulated court proceedings, which usually involves drafting briefs (or memorials) and oral argumentation.
12 teams of law students from different countries will take part in this competition. Special guest Irmantas Jarukaitis (Judge at the EU Court of Justice) will talk about the role and the impact of the EU CoJ.
Main competition will be held in Kazimieras Simonavicius University. The semi-finals and the final battle will take place at the Vilnius District Court.
Event date: March 27-31, 2023.
Last week (on June 30), the members of the Board of Kazimieras Simonavičius University gathered for a meeting. During the meeting, the new image of KSU, the results of the 2021-2022 academic year, and the current admission to the bachelor’s, master’s and integrated study programs offered by the University were discussed. The members of the KSU Board also discussed and made proposals regarding the strengthening of the international strategy of the university, the development of the innovative teaching methodology and improvement of the content of study programmes to meet the needs of the market and employers.
We are extremely happy that heads of foreign universities, experienced scientists, representatives of various businesses and the public sector have become involved in the activities of the University and have expressed their trust in our vision.
The Board is an advisory body of the University’s strategic management, the purpose of which is to determine, analyze and monitor the directions of the University’s strategic development, as well as the maintenance and development of strategic international, political, business and cultural relations.

The Senate of Kazimieras Simonavičius University convened last week. KSU Senate consists of 20 members representing the academic community of the university – professors and students – and other Lithuanian and foreign research and study institutions.
Prof. Dr. Steffen Roth was elected Chairman of the Senate, and Prof. Dr. Ryšardas Burda was elected Vice-Chairman.
During the Senate meeting, a new image and logo of KSU were presented, and discussions were held on the university’s research strategy and university development.
We are pleased with the involvement and contribution of the KSU Senate to the strategic development of the university, community mobilization and networking.
Last week, researchers from Kazimieras Simonavicius University Next Society Institute gathered in Vilnius for a three-day seminar during which the planning of research ideas and projects, a strategic planning session and preparations for the Next Society Forum took place.
Next Society Institute (NSI) was established at KSU in 2021. The NSI advances social systems theory in the tradition of Niklas Luhmann and explores synergies with alternative schools of systems theories in domains such as:
– Theories of society;
– Social theories;
– Theories of social differentiation;
– Theories of new and old media;
– Management and organisation theories;
– Theories of foresight and anticipation.

Kazimieras Simonavičius University has joined the European Parliament to Campus initiative! On February 25 Hans-Olaf Henkel, a former Member of the European Parliament, gave a lecture to students of the KSU Law study programme on the EU’s role in strengthening human rights, the rule of law and democracy. Students had fruitful discussion with the invited lecturer and KSU professor dr. Dalia Perkumienė. Such event enriched KSU studies with international experience. The topic of the lecture was especially relevant in the current context of events in Ukraine.
The lecturer obtained education at Hamburg University of Economics and Politics. 2014-2019 was a Member of European Parliament: Vice-Chair in the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy, participated in the activities of Committee of Inquiry into Emission Measurements in the Automotive Sector and Subcommittee on Human Rights. The lecture was organised in cooperation with The European Parliament Former Members Association (FMA), which brings together more than 800 former MEPs from all EU countries and across the whole political spectrum. Its aim is to inform the citizens of the European Union about EU policies, decisions, institutions and opportunities to participate in legislation and to build a better Europe by involving former MEPs in their work.
We are happy to host 29 Erasmus exchange students from Spain, Italy, France, and Turkey in the Spring semester of 2022. As every year, the Orientation Week was organized for students who came to Kazimieras Simonavičius University from abroad, during which the students got acquainted with the University and the study process, lecturers and each other.
This year, activities for international students were organized remotely, but this did not diminish the joy of getting to know the University and present their home countries. We hope that all students will return on site soon and meet their colleagues live!
On 28 January, KSU team participated in the first partner meeting of the international project “Developing and Consolidating ICT Skills in a Digitalised Environment in Higher Education”, during which the project activities, deadlines and responsibilities of the partners were discussed.
During the implementation of the project, 3 new modules will be developed on ICT, business and life skills, an open learning digitalised platform will be created and training for teachers will be organised.
The project is implemented by 3 universities: St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia (Bulgaria), Kazimieras Simonavičius University (Lithuania) and University of Žilina (Slovakia).
Project is funded with support from the European Union under the programme Erasmus+.
